Disability Support Services For Employees

Faculty and staff of Rice University who have disability-related needs or questions can contact Disability Support Services(DSS). Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act provides protections for qualified persons with disabilities in the realm of employment and guidelines for reasonable accommodations to enable a qualified person with a disability to work.  See Rice University Policy No. 402-94. Accommodation Request Procedures are linked to this policy.  Employees are encouraged to review these procedures if they have disability-related work concerns.

The Disability Support Services office works in conjunction with the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity and Human Resources in providing disability-related services for employees of Rice University.

For information about job accommodations for employees with disabilities, an excellent resource is the Job Accommodation Network.

Employees with temporary work or mobility restrictions can contact Disability Support Services to evaluate options for assistance during a period of recovery.

Medical Alert

Staff with major medical or physical conditions who have the possibility of experiencing a health related crisis while at Rice University can complete a Medical Alert form.  Individuals with epilepsy, diabetes, cardiac conditions or other health conditions may wish to complete a Medical Alert form.  The form can then be distributed to the university personnel chosen by the person.  This may include the Rice EMS unit, coworkers, and work supervisors.  Contact the DSS office, Extension 5841,  to discuss completion of this form and distribution of the information to targeted campus personnel.

Completing a Medical Alert form does not guarantee specific medical responses or treatment were a crisis to occur.  The Medical Alert form assists university personnel in being familiar with a person's medical background in the event of a crisis.

Consultation

The Director of Disability Support Services can be contacted for consultation on matters relating to general disability information.
