Campus Access
Rice University is continually improving access to all campus facilities with:
- Building access - all academic and administrative buildings are wheelchair accessible except Lovett Hall and Mech Lab
- Wheelchair accessible stacks and study areas in Fondren Library, with book retrieval for less accessible areas
- Wheelchair accessible computer facilities throughout campus
- Assisted listening systems in numerous campus lecture and concert/performance halls
- Wheelchair accessible student rooms in most of the residential colleges and at the graduate housing facilities
- Accessible eating areas in all college commons
- Automatic door openers on many building entrances
- Wheelchair accessible campus shuttle buses
An Adaptive Technology Lab is available in Fondren Library. Equipment includes computers with image enlarging software, JAWS screen reading software, and Kurzweil 1000 and 3000 scan and read systems. Additional adaptive equipment includes refreshable Braille display, closed circuit TV, specialty keyboards, and Braille embossers.
Houston area individuals who use the city's Metro Lift service to come to Rice University should use the street address of 5999 Kent Street. This is the Metro address to the Ley Student Center which is centrally located and an excellent starting location for any campus destination.
TDD/TTY phone for use by the deaf is available in Fondren Library; contact the Circulation Desk for access to the room where the TDD/TTY is located.
The Disability Support Services Office publishes the Rice Accessibility Map which shows accessible entrances to all buildings, accessible parking areas, curb cuts, and other helpful information about the university. To obtain a copy of the Rice Accessibility Map, contact the DSS Office or pick one up at the Welcome Center.
Parking on Campus
There are ample accessible parking spaces located around the campus. Visitors can review locations of parking lots and designated accessible spaces on the campus map. If a student, employee or visitor has a concern about where to find accessible spaces, the Director of Disability Support Services can be contacted at (713) 348-5841.
